Coffee & Chat

Coffee & Chat

Jan Cheney 0400 889 705

As usual, we had plenty of "chat" amongst the thirteen members present – a few regulars were away
at other functions. All enjoyed our morning coffee in October on a pleasant but windy morning.
Our next get together is on Tuesday, 18th November at 10.00 am.
We will continue at Olive Lane Café in Doncaster Road, North Balwyn Village
as all who attend seem very happy at this venue.
All will be made most welcome.
Hope you will be joining us.

Presidents Message

President Peter's Ponderings For This Month

The November General Meeting is the last for 2025 and in accord with our Constitution, nominations will be sought for Committee vacancies.

Committee membership does require personal time but in so saying it is rewarding knowing the decisions we make and directions we take deliver a level of participation and interest that will see the club move into its 22nd year and beyond.

Committee aside, my focus this month is the dual member Speakers position and the underwhelming support for filling the position.

Several past and present committee/SIG members have demonstrated by example that it is not rocket science and that there is an excellent template to follow. These members are finite in number and the life line as I call it at best does not stretch past March 2026.

What we need to start the ball rolling is for just one member to approach any committee member and say:

“I’ll do it but find me a partner!”

With this first step in place we can then canvass for a partner and ideally have a speaker structure in place for April 2026 and beyond.

This approach worked for the Outings position!
No reason why not for Speakers.

Convenor: Shirley Fenemor

Well, we are away again, this time to New Zealand with David Hutt.

We will meet on Wednesday 26th November, 7.30pm at Manningtree as usual but as this will be our last get-together before Christmas, we will make it a Christmas Breakup and ask that you bring a small plate to share at supper.

David has presented for us several times and we have found these occasions very interesting. He usually rides his bike around Europe or the UK but after having viewed some photos he sent me, I did confirm with him that this time it was without the bike!!

If you are new and need more information, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Spring is in the air and everywhere, although increasingly less so in our step than formerly. And with the Spring comes racing, replacing footy but with the prospect of cricket to come. And one supposes the climax to Formula 1 and the McLaren rivalry – the economics of that circus defy comprehension, particularly to those of us who have trouble with more than three noughts at the end of any equation. Ever more, the remote aspects of abstract thought eludes us. Nevertheless, we are happy that an Australian, and particularly one with an age profile we can appreciate, shared the Nobel Prize for Chemistry.

c

In case you missed it, the award, (accordingly to the Nobel Web-site for Dummies), was for:

“..the development of a new type of molecular architecture. The constructions they created – metal–organic frameworks – contain large cavities in which molecules can flow in and out.”

And this was cooked up by Richard Robson 50 years ago while at Melbourne Uni trying, as best I can see, to create rigid structures that resemble three-dimensional crochet.

These it is said “were quite rickety and tended to fall apart”: at least we can understand that!

However, his idea found some root, over many years. One of his fellow prize-winners, Susumu Kitagawa, stated he followed an important principle: to try to see “the usefulness of useless.”

Now that is comforting thought as we survey the accumulation of stuff in our view and in our minds and in our sheds, et al.

But all will be clear at the forthcoming meeting of Brew & Chew - at the Camberwell library at 10.00am on November 26th, the fourth Wednesday as always.

This Meeting's Speaker

Our guest speaker for November is  Member Gillian Yung

Gillian has a keen interest in Australian history but not the events that make the headlines in the history books. Rather she likes to know the personalities behind the big events and the motivations

"Convict Woman To Wealthy Widow"

October Speaker

Our October speaker was Councillor Sophie Torney,

Mayor of Boroondara Council.

Underlining the presentation was the emphasis that Council is about Community and Transparency with the encouragement to observe council meetings and don’t hold back on contacting your ward councillor on matters important to you.

Her address then focused on providing a macro awareness of significant resources available to senior residents and the avenues of access. So much to absorb, however these services are covered in more detail in several council publications and in particular:

How to access Council’s aged care services.
A guide for seniors in Boroondara.

Question time did open up a number of issues outside the subject matter and the clear direction was contact your councillor, he/she is your voice to Council.

All in all it was a very enjoyable performance and we appreciated her taking the time to talk to our club.

Annette Brownscombe 0418 400 352 & Sandy Tilley 0460 678 668

Twenty-two club members enjoyed The Midweek Matinee at The Round Theatre in Nunawading.

We listened to many different Broadway songs sung by the international opera singer Claire Lyon and then

had a welcome coffee and cake before heading home.

Planning for 2026 is already under way and we will endeavour to spread the activities over a greater range of week days. More Midweek Matinees, hopefully 2 bus trips and a ride on the new underground railway are just some of the ideas.

Looking forward to meeting more of our members at next year’s outings
