Last Meeting's Speaker

Matthew Etty-Leal’s talk for our July meeting was about the central Victorian town of Maldon near Castlemaine in the Shire of Mount Alexander.

We saw many interesting photos throughout his presentation.

The Victorian Goldfields Railway runs between the two towns, a short run of about 17 kilometres.

Maldon was classified in 1966 by the National trust as the First Notable Town in Australia; notable for its 19th century appearance, maintained since gold- rush days. In 1853 gold was discovered and Maldon proved to be one of Victoria's richest quartz mining centres.

Test cricket captain of the 1930s and scornful of the English Bodyline era bowlers, William (Bill) Woodfull OBE was born in Maldon in 1897. The local cricket ground is named in his honour.

Henry (Ethel) Handel Richardson's mother ran the local post office for a time. The author (HHR) wrote about the town in her memoir, ‘Myself When Young’.

His talk was well prepared and presented and enthusiastically received.
